How to Make Chai Cold Brew in the Ovalware RJ3 Cold Brew Maker

in Brewed on 12/16/20

Learn how to make both iced tea and cold brew with the Ovalware RJ3 Cold Brew Maker, and combine the two for a batch of wintery, chai cold brew.

Jump to Recipe
  • The Ovalware RJ3 Cold Brew Maker is a stunning cold brew maker and server that any coffee lover would enjoy.
  • Besides making cold brew, this instrument also makes incredible iced tea.
  • To take advantage of its multi-capabilities, you can make a batch of wintery, chai cold brew.
  • Use light roast coffee and high-quality chai looseleaf tea to achieve the best flavors in this chai cold brew recipe.

Note: This is a sponsored blog post, but all opinions are my own.

The Ovalware Cold Brew Maker brews high-quality cold brew, and boasts of one of the most elegant designs for a cold brew maker. It excels in making both cold brew and flavored cold brew.

Recently, I learned that it’s also possible to brew iced tea in this stunning vessel. With some experimenting, I’ve developed a chai cold brew recipe that allows you to take full advantage of this cold brew maker’s multi-purpose capabilities. Read on for brewing tips when making this recipe for chai cold brew.

Begin by making cold brew in the Ovalware Cold Brew Maker.

Following this best basic cold brew recipe, you can learn how to make amazing cold brew in the Ovalware. I like to use a coffee to water ratio of about 1:5 for making cold brew. This comes out to be about 85 grams of coarsely ground coffee and 380 grams of water if using the Ovalware.

It’s also important to use high-quality filtered water and to allow the brew to steep for at least 12 hours in the fridge for proper extraction.

Use a light roast coffee to highlight the tea-like flavors of this recipe.

Usually, I recommend using a dark roast to highlight the chocolatey flavors that come through when making cold brew. However, in this case, I suggest using a very light roast coffee.

Light roast coffee highlights the natural flavors of the coffee’s origin. It tends to offer more delicate, fruity and herbal flavors that are very much akin to a tea. This tea-like body and flavor will beautifully complement the iced chai tea when combined in the recipe below.

After the cold brew is made, store it in a mason jar or in an air tight vessel in the fridge.

Because you will need the Ovalware to make the iced tea, you’ll need to pour the cold brew into another container or mason jar to store in the fridge until you’ve finished making the iced chai tea. I recommend using a mason jar because of their tight seals, but anything with a tight lid will also work.

Be sure to wash and dry the Ovalware before making the iced tea described in the next step.

Source high-quality looseleaf tea to brew the chai tea in your Ovalware Cold Brew Maker.

Now that the Ovalware Cold Brew Maker is clean and ready to go, it’s time to brew the iced chai tea. I’ve found that looseleaf tea works best for this recipe. Not only does it feel more authentic in using looseleaf tea, but it also elevates the flavor. If you’re able to splurge, I recommend going for an organic, looseleaf chai tea.

Dump 8 teaspoons of looseleaf tea into the filter.

For this recipe, I used about 8 teaspoons of tea leaves or 32 grams. This is more than you typically should add when brewing iced tea. On average, 4 to 6 teaspoons will suffice but I went for a stronger brew because I wanted to be sure that I would be able to taste the chai when combined with the cold brew. You’ll put the tea leaves into the filter.

Note that the tea leaves won’t look like much when in the filter, but it is plenty. You really don’t want to go over 8 teaspoons, as this is already a lot.

Pour filtered water over the tea leaves, as it will make a world of difference.

Next, pour 380 grams of filtered water over the tea leaves in the filter. It’s so important to use filtered water because tea is largely water. If your water quality is lacking, your tea will be negatively affected. Filtered water, spring water, or high-quality bottled water will all suffice.

Add the filtered water until it reaches the max line on the Ovalware Cold Brew Maker. Then, briefly stir the loose leaf tea to start the brewing process.

Steep in the fridge for about 12 hours or longer for a strong tea.

Replace the cap onto the cold brew maker and place the Ovalware in the fridge to steep for 12 hours. Typically, the steeping time for black teas is between 10 and 12 hours, but because you want a strong tea, the full 12 hours is necessary here.

Time it just right.

Timing is important when it comes to this batch of iced tea. Make sure that you are available to pull the filter out of the cold brew maker once the tea has finished steeping. You don’t want the tea to be overstepped and result in a bitter flavor.

If you make the iced tea in the evening, it can steep overnight. When you wake up, you can then take the filter out and enjoy the iced tea in the morning — this tends to work well for many people’s schedules.

Once the tea has finished steeping, remove the filter and place the cap back on the cold brew maker. It can be stored in the fridge for up to a week.

Combine the cold brew and the chai tea to make the chai cold brew.

Now, you have all of the ingredients to finish the chai cold brew recipe. The cold brew to chai tea ratio for this recipe is about 1:2. This is a good place to start. From this point, you can continue to add more chai tea based on your preferences.

Cold brew is rather strong, and will easily take over the flavor of this beverage, if you don’t add enough chai tea. To help gauge how much chai to put in, the chai should be the dominant flavor in this drink.

Serve in a clear glass with plenty of ice!

Next, pour your drink into a beautiful clear glass such as Ovalware’s Double Wall Tasting Glass Cups and add plenty of ice.

Consider adding milk (or water) to dilute the chai cold brew mixture if it’s too strong. You can also add honey for a sweeter take on this drink. Enjoy!

Iced Oat Milk Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe

Pumpkin spice mixture:
½ cup oat milk (barista blend if possible)
⅓ cup brown sugar (white is okay too)
2 tsp pumpkin puree
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp vanilla extract
Latte
2 shots of espresso
1 cup oat milk
1 tbsp pumpkin spice mixture
½ cup whipped cream (optional)
2 ice cubes (if enjoying cold)

Pumpkin spice mixture:
1. In a small sauce pan, add oat milk, sugar, pumpkin puree, and pumpkin pie spice. Bring to medium heat and whisk ingredients together until sugar is dissolved. Do not let it boil.
2. Once the mixture starts to steam and the sugar is completely dissolved, remove the pan from heat and stir in the vanilla. Strain through a fine mesh filter into a glass jar for easy storage.
Latte:
3. Pull your espresso shots, and pour inside your desired coffee mug. Add the strained pumpkin spice mixture to the espresso and stir well.
4. If enjoying warm (skip to next step if enjoying iced), steam your milk using a steam wand, milk frother, or mason jar (see post above to make foam without a frother) until foamy. Pour velvety milk on top of the espresso mixture.
5. For iced pumpkin spice lattes, add 2 to 3 ice cubes or cold brew coffee cubes to your mixture.
6. Top with whipped cream, if desired, and dust with pumpkin pie spice. Enjoy!
