Strawberry Coffee Recipe Tips & Tricks

Begin by making the homemade strawberry whipped cream.

Before you do anything else, begin by making the homemade strawberry whipped cream. You will need the following ingredients and equipment: ¾ cup heavy whipping cream, ¼ cup powdered sugar, ⅓ cup sliced strawberries, ½ tsp vanilla extract, a large mixing bowl (large enough to fit a hand mixer), and an electric hand or stand mixer. You can also do the whisking by hand, but it will require some muscle!

Start by whipping the heavy cream with your hand mixer until stiff peaks form. Slowly, add the powdered sugar to the whipped cream. Whip the powdered sugar and cream mixture again until stiff peaks form. Ensure that the peaks are firm, and the cream has essentially lost its sheen.

Next, add the sliced strawberries to the whipped cream, and whisk until the strawberries have been fully incorporated. The strawberries should break down mostly, but it’s okay if there are a few chunks left. You should be left with a thick, creamy, and slightly pink strawberry whipped cream. Set the whipped cream aside if you’re going to make your latte right away. Otherwise, place it into the fridge, covered, until you’re ready to make your latte.

Prepare the milk (of your choice) by foaming or frothing it to your desired consistency.

After you’ve prepared the strawberry whipped cream, you’ll need to froth your milk for your latte. Before we get too far into the details of milk frothing, you also should begin preparing your coffee grounds to pull your espresso shot. It’s ideal to pull the shot while you froth the milk (you can do this only with an espresso machine!), but you can also pull the shot immediately after you’ve frothed the milk. More details on this on the next step. Now onto the milk frothing details:

You can go about foaming milk a few different ways. One option is to use a milk steaming wand that comes attached to an espresso machine. For a step-by-step tutorial on how to make perfect foam for lattes, check out this post.

Another option is to use an electric frothing wand. This is a great option if you don’t want to yet splurge on a fancy espresso machine. Frothing wands are fairly inexpensive, and you can achieve nearly the same milk texture necessary for making delicious home lattes and cappuccinos if you find a good one. I highly recommend Subminimal’s NanoFoamer. It does wonders to make superfine microfoam for lattes (and for latte art if you want to go that route!).

For this strawberry latte, you’ll need about 1/2 to 2/3 cup of milk and you’ll want to create a smooth milk foam rather than milk froth, which has more volume. Of course, it’s ultimately up to you and what kind of milk texture you prefer! After you’d foamed or frothed your milk, set it aside and begin pulling your espresso.

Quickly but carefully, prepare the espresso shots into your serving mug.

As mentioned previously, this next step needs to either be done while you prepare the milk or immediately after. Pulling the espresso must be done quickly and accurately for best results. This is so the milk stays warm and the espresso is served fresh!

To pull an espresso shot, follow the instructions in this post on pulling the perfect espresso or grab the free espresso guide at the bottom of this post. Jump right to it here!

If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can also buy a double shot of espresso from your local coffee shop or you can make a highly concentrated cup of coffee. To do this, you would beed to reduce the coffee to water ratio to 1:2. That’s one parts coffee grounds to 2 parts water. It’s not my first choice, but it is an option for those who don’t have an espresso machine.

Pour the milk over the espresso, and dollop the strawberry whipped cream on top.

After you’ve prepared your espresso and milk, it’s now time to combine the two ingredients into your serving mug. Hopefully, you pulled the espresso shot into your serving cup, but if not, go ahead and pour the espresso into your cup first. Next pour your milk froth over the espresso shot. You will only need to use about 1/2 cup of milk foam. Stir gently. This is not as much milk foam as you would use in a typical latte, but that’s because you will be adding the strawberry whipped cream to compensate for the lesser amount of milk.

Now, for the fun part. Get your strawberry whipped cream from the fridge, and dollop 2 to 3 tablespoons on top of latte. If you want it to look extra pretty, you can also place the cream into a frosting bag with a fancy tip and add the cream that way. In the photos, I just dolloped it on with a spoon, and I think it looks perfectly imperfect. It even spilled over the sides, which gave it a messy but pretty look!

Garnish the top with additional sliced strawberries and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

To finish the latte off, you can add additional sliced strawberries to the top of the whipped cream and/or a sprinkle of ground cinnamon. It gives the latte some extra color and the cinnamon adds some extra flavor that bodes well with the whipped strawberry cream!

For even more added flavor, you can whisk the strawberry whipped cream into the latte. This adds a hint of strawberry into the actual latte, giving it a pretty unique taste worth trying rather than trying to keep the whipped cream afloat on top the entire time you drink this strawberry coffee latte!

Pairing of the Week

Pair this latte with strawberry shortcake to bring out more fruity flavors.

As always, I have to provide you with the perfect food pairing to go along with your coffee. For this strawberry whipped latte, I recommend going with the food and coffee pairing principle of “like goes with like.” Find a dessert with strawberries as the star such as a strawberry shortcake or go for straight up sliced strawberries on the side of this latte.

This will more obviously bring out the delicate fruity flavors of the whipped cream so you can actually get more of the strawberry tasting notes as you sip on your latte!

Iced Oat Milk Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe

Pumpkin spice mixture:
½ cup oat milk (barista blend if possible)
⅓ cup brown sugar (white is okay too)
2 tsp pumpkin puree
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp vanilla extract
Latte
2 shots of espresso
1 cup oat milk
1 tbsp pumpkin spice mixture
½ cup whipped cream (optional)
2 ice cubes (if enjoying cold)

Pumpkin spice mixture:
1. In a small sauce pan, add oat milk, sugar, pumpkin puree, and pumpkin pie spice. Bring to medium heat and whisk ingredients together until sugar is dissolved. Do not let it boil.
2. Once the mixture starts to steam and the sugar is completely dissolved, remove the pan from heat and stir in the vanilla. Strain through a fine mesh filter into a glass jar for easy storage.
Latte:
3. Pull your espresso shots, and pour inside your desired coffee mug. Add the strained pumpkin spice mixture to the espresso and stir well.
4. If enjoying warm (skip to next step if enjoying iced), steam your milk using a steam wand, milk frother, or mason jar (see post above to make foam without a frother) until foamy. Pour velvety milk on top of the espresso mixture.
5. For iced pumpkin spice lattes, add 2 to 3 ice cubes or cold brew coffee cubes to your mixture.
6. Top with whipped cream, if desired, and dust with pumpkin pie spice. Enjoy!
