A fun way to spice up your coffee routine is by literally adding spice to it. A dirty chai is just a latte (consisting of foamy milk and espresso) with a splash of chai concentrate. To make a chai concentrate, you must combine a number of spices including ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, star anise, black peppercorns, and cinnamon (with a few other ingredients as well — see below!).
In combining the chai concentrate with a normal latte, you’re left with a warm and spicy espresso drink that is sure to keep you perked up all throughout the day.

This is a great way to mix up your coffee routine.
If you’re sick of your usual coffee routine, adding some chai to your day can spice things up (quite literally!).
The chai in this recipe adds a hint of sweetness to your morning coffee with some spice. It’s not overly sweet, and of course, can be adjusted with the amount of chai concentrate you decide to put in your iced latte.
My favorite chai concentrate is Rishi Masala Chai.

Chai concentrate is a very strong brew of chai tea that must be diluted with water or milk. You can enjoy it sweetened or unsweetened depending on your personal preference.
Rishi Masala Chai Tea Concentrate is my favorite. It’s not overly sweet, and has a real taste to it (I’ve noticed some concentrates can taste really artificial, and this one does not). This brand of chai concentrate is also organic, which is always a perk in my book.
Another option is to make a homemade chai tea concentrate. It requires quite a few ingredients and a bit of energy, but it allows you to tailor the recipe to your personal taste.
Replace espresso with a strong cup of coffee, if you don’t have an espresso machine.
If you don’t have a fancy espresso machine (or the time and energy to make an espresso without a machine — yes, it can be done!), you can use 1/2 cup of really strong coffee. This will work just as well, and it tastes just as delicious!
If you need help with your espresso, I also have an espresso brew guide (at the bottom of this post) and a guide for making an espresso-like concentrate using an AeroPress. Find the AeroPress guide by clicking here.
Enjoy this dirty chai warm by skipping the ice cubes and foaming your milk.
For those of you who prefer a warm/hot dirty chai, this recipe can be easily modified. Simply foam or froth your milk before adding it to the chai mixture as described in the recipe below.
You can foam your milk by using a steam wand, using a milk frother, or by shaking up your milk of choice in a mason jar (see post here for details!).
To enjoy warm, you also will go ahead and skip adding the ice cubes.
