Coffee Ice Cubes Recipe

The perfect summer coffee hack to keep you caffeinated.

  • Whether or not you’re enjoying warm weather, an iced coffee drink can quickly turn into a watery mess if you don’t drink it fast enough.
  • Instead of throwing it out, try cold brew coffee ice cubes.
  • It does take a day of preparation, but you’re then set for weeks.

This summer, almond-essence iced lattes have won my heart. To my dismay, I’ve noticed that my lattes quickly fall apart as soon as my ice cubes start melting.

To remedy this, I remembered an article I wrote for Insider a while back on coffee hacks. One of the tips that came to mind was coffee ice cubes. But instead of using coffee, I wondered if I could use cold brew coffee instead. The reason being, I prefer the taste of cold brew over iced coffee. Thus, this is what prompted my obsession with making cold brew coffee batches specifically for ice cubes.

Make your cold brew in advance.

I brew my cold brew in the morning using my favorite Ovalware Cold Brew Coffee Maker. I let it sit in the fridge to brew for the rest of the day and night. It makes about 20 to 24 ounces of cold brew. I come back to it the next morning to continue the process.

After the cold brew has steeped, grab your ice cube trays.

The following morning, I start filling my ice cube trays evenly. I am pretty careful about my pouring because I don’t want to waste any precious cold brew. The 20 ounces usually fills about one and a half trays or 16 to 24 ice cube wells.

Helpful Hint: I put my cold brew trays underneath my normal ice trays, so the cold brew won’t leak into my regular ice cube trays.

Let the cold brew ice cubes set for at least 4 hours.

Letting them set long enough is key. This entire process takes about one to two days because you have to account for the steeping time of the cold brew (between 8 and 12 hours) and the time it takes the cold brew to become solid (at least 4 hours). I usually let mine sit in the freezer until the following morning.

Once the ice cubes have set, take them out of the freezer, and enjoy with your favorite iced latte.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the coffee for the next few weeks.

I do this process once about every two to three weeks because 16 to 24 cold brew cubes lasts me a while. I only use two or maybe three cubes in my drink because they are VERY caffeinated.

Pour cold brew evenly into ice cube trays. Place trays in the freezer for at least 4 hours so they have time to set. Once solid, add cubes to your favorite summer coffee beverage.

Coffee Pairing of the Week: Wisconsin’s Famous K Coffee Pairing of the Week: Wisconsin’s Famous Kringle with Gesha Coffee

While some of us are familiar with wine and cheese pairings, most of us are not as familiar with coffee and food pairings (and I don’t know about you, but I tend to enjoy this combo much more frequently than the former).

As a tribute to my home state, I attempted to make kringle, and I’ve discovered it’s a lot harder than it looks. The one pictured is actually a kringle from an authentic Danish bakery in WI because my first attempts have yet to be successful. And while kringle is good on its own, it’s even better when perfectly paired with a Gesha coffee.

The reason I went with this choice is because Gesha coffee is almost like a tea. The flavors are complex and boast of sweet, floral notes. Gesha coffee also has a much lighter body than most other coffees. This mild quality works to delicately compliment the buttery and fruity flavors of this pastry, but it won’t entirely overtake the wonderful flavors of the kringle.

Do you have a favorite Gesha coffee? I’ve shared my favorite in the comments below!

Coffee Pairing of the Week: Rustic Apple Tart with Coffee Pairing of the Week: Rustic Apple Tart with a Full-Bodied, Fruity Blend
⁣
When coffee is paired properly, you’re able to taste enhanced flavors of both the coffee and the food. Foods that are buttery, such as this apple tart, are excellent companions. The coffee intensifies and complements the buttery sweetness of the crust, making for a perfect match.
⁣
Try pairing an apple tart with a full-bodied light roast such as Intelligentsia’s Frequency Blend. This blend has tasting notes of dried fruit, almond, and milk chocolate so you get the best of both worlds.
Today’s brew is from my all-time favorite coffee Today’s brew is from my all-time favorite coffee shop — Bradbury’s located in Madison, Wisconsin. This coffee shop turned me into a coffee snob. I’ve yet to find an equivalent bright cup of coffee anywhere else.
⁣
When I was home for the holidays, I bought a bag of their seasonal blend by Ruby’s Colorful Coffees. This blend consists of beans from El Salvador and Ethiopia. I tried these beans with an AeroPress and an espresso machine. I much prefer it as espresso, as Bradbury’s bright & distinguished flavors really pop when properly extracted this way.
