Studies have shown that coffee drinkers have up to a 65 percent lower risk of getting Alzheimer’s and a 60 percent decreased risk of getting Parkinson’s disease.
In addition, black coffee can also aid in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Coffee drinkers have a 23 to 50 percent lower chance of getting this disease.

A great way to ease your way into becoming a black coffee drinker is to make good black coffee. This is done by buying freshly roasted whole coffee beans (or by roasting your own beans), using an excellent brew method such as pour over, and using high-quality water in your brew.

Decrease the amount of sugar or milk you put in your coffee gradually.
Cream and sugar, unfortunately, can dull the unique flavors of your coffee. It also makes your cup of coffee less healthy with the increased caloric and fat intake (compared to black coffee which has less than 5 calories and no fat).
To help make the transition to black coffee a little easier, one thing you can do is to slowly decrease the amount you put in every day. Begin by measuring out how much sugar and cream you put in your coffee on a normal day. Once you have this baseline, stick to that amount for about one week making sure not to go over that amount (not even once!).
After you’ve done that, go ahead and reduce the baseline amount by a quarter and then stick to that amount for the week. Continue to decrease by a quarter until you get down to no cream and sugar. Then, pat yourself on the back for getting to this point — congrats (I know it’s not an easy feat!).
Taste test different types of coffee.
In the age of third wave coffee, there is a plethora of coffee options available at your fingertips. Whether you want to try a local roaster down the street or order some special beans from across the country, there’s a coffee that’s right for you. It might take some trial and error to get there, so don’t lose hope.
If you’re looking for a good coffee that tastes excellent black, I personally would recommend a medium roast or a light roast for the more adventurous taste testers from Blue Bottle Coffee. As you can see, there are a ton of reasons to drink black coffee. Though it may be challenging at first if you’re not used to the taste, it’s well worth in the end for the incredible health benefits it offers and to be able to develop a palate that can taste incredible coffee flavors. It does take some getting used to – so you can ease into it slowly by using less and less milk each day!
